Bendigo Is Building for the Future
Bendigo is on the move—literally.
Significant funding has been allocated across the Greater Bendigo municipality in 2024/25 for a wide-ranging program of infrastructure and community upgrades. This isn’t just about maintenance. It’s a targeted, strategic rollout of over 100 projects that stretch from Elmore to Epsom, Eaglehawk to Kennington.
From smoother roads and safer bridges to revitalised parks and reimagined public spaces—this is long-term city building, not short-term patchwork.
Small Changes, Big Community Impact
The numbers are significant, but the impact is personal. Whether it’s a new footpath outside your child’s school, a safer crossing at a busy CBD intersection, or freshly resurfaced local sports courts—these upgrades affect how we move, play, gather and live.
A perfect example? The long-overdue upgrade to Wattle Street bridge. Damaged and inaccessible to pedestrians, the 115-year-old structure is finally being restored and fitted with a new shared path—making it safer for students and residents to cross Bendigo Creek.
Safer Streets, Smarter Travel
With over $6.3 million committed to major road rebuilds and another $5 million to road reseals and patching, Bendigo’s roads are undergoing one of the most comprehensive improvement programs in years. Key routes like Howard Street, Nolan Street and Forest Lane are getting significant attention, improving safety, reducing wear and tear on vehicles, and supporting growing traffic volumes in expanding areas.
And it doesn’t stop there. New roundabouts, raised pedestrian crossings and 11 new or upgraded footpaths are being introduced to help manage traffic flows and improve pedestrian safety—particularly in high-activity areas like Bendigo, Ironbark and Huntly.
Walking, Riding and Rolling Into a More Connected City
Sustainable travel is a key theme this year, and the Mundy Street Shared Path is at the heart of it. Funded by the Victorian Government, this $3.74M project will deliver a protected walking and cycling corridor between the Law Courts and Back Creek, linking into the wider Bendigo Creek trail network.
It’s more than a footpath—it’s a safer school run, a smoother commute, and a meaningful reduction in vehicle congestion through the city centre. The addition of pedestrian-operated traffic lights at major intersections will also make crossing safer for all users, from schoolkids to mobility scooter riders.
Recreation That Reflects Real Demand
Local sports and community facilities aren’t being left behind. Investments across Marong, Strathfieldsaye, Spring Gully and California Gully are refreshing netball, tennis, cricket and soccer facilities to match growing participation.
From the $1.6M new tennis courts at Strathfieldsaye Community Hub to updated nets and new scoreboards in Marong, these upgrades are creating more inclusive, usable and professional community sport spaces.
Public Spaces That Invite You In
There’s also a strong focus on revitalising shared spaces that define Bendigo’s lifestyle. Projects like the $3M redevelopment of the Municipal Baths and Kennington Reservoir dam wall repairs are about preserving the city’s character while making it safer, cleaner, and more functional for modern use.
Even small-scale projects like lighting upgrades at the Bendigo Library and painting works at local preschools contribute to the sense of care and usability throughout the region.
